About Hannah Wallin (1846–1914)
Hannah Chadbourne Wallin ran for a seat on the Grand Rapids Board of Education on September 3, 1888. Running in the Eighth Ward, she lost the election by an estimated 158 votes. But even though Wallin did not get her chance to serve her community on the school board, she did play an active role in the women’s club movement in Grand Rapids.
Wallin was born in Batavia, New York, on February 14, 1846, but moved to Michigan with her parents around the age of eight. She moved to Grand Rapids with her husband, Franklin B. Wallin, in the early 1880s. Wallin counted herself a member of Grand Rapids’s prestigious Ladies’ Literary Club and took on religious work as a member of the Park Congregational Church. And in 1909 she served as regent for the Sophie De Marsac Campau chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Hannah Wallin died of pneumonia on January 14, 1914 and was memorialized in local papers for her work in women’s clubs.
